Picture it: someone, somewhere, asks ChatGPT “who makes beautiful, hand-crafted templates for small wellness brands?”
The machine answers, warmly and instantly, with a list of names. The question is whether yours is on it. Because that moment — not a Google search, not an ad — is increasingly where first contact happens. And most small businesses are not in the answer. One recent test of fifty small businesses found just six showed up in AI answers at all. The other forty-four? Invisible at the exact moment someone was looking.
How the machines actually read you
Think of an AI assistant as a very literal, very well-read intern. It doesn’t respond to mood boards or vibes; it responds to clear statements. What you sell, said plainly. Who it’s for, said specifically. Questions answered on the page, not buried in a FAQ nobody scrolls to.
The other thing it reads is structure — the behind-the-scenes labels that tell a machine “this is a product, this is the price, this is the author.” It sounds technical, but it’s really just good manners: introducing yourself properly to whoever comes knocking, human or otherwise.
Three fixes you can make this weekend
One — say what you sell, out loud, on your homepage. Not “create your vision” alone (lovely as it is). Machines — and tired humans — need the plain version too: what it is, who it’s for, what happens after they buy.
Two — answer the questions your clients actually ask. Every time you type the same reply to the same email, that’s a blog post waiting to exist. AI assistants quote sites that answer questions; they cannot quote a site that never does.
Three — make sure nothing is blocking the door. A current sitemap, honest page titles, no accidental “do not enter” signs for the friendly crawlers. Most sites are fine once someone actually checks.
I couldn’t help but wonder: we spend hours choosing the perfect Instagram grid, and zero minutes asking a chatbot what it knows about us. Maybe swap that ratio for a week and see what happens.
This site practises what I preach — every product page now speaks plainly to humans and machines, in structured language the assistants can quote. If you’d like yours checked over, that’s a quiet hour’s work: start here.
